The Essex Inn Green Hotel Initiative

Our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment

In 2008 Chicago’s Essex Inn was Green Seal-certified Bronze for our progressive environmental policies. Our hotel meets the Green Seal Environmental Standard for U.S. Lodging Properties for waste minimization, water and energy efficiency, hazardous substances handling, and environmentally responsible purchasing.

About Green Seal

Green Seal is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment and promoting the manufacture, purchase and use of environmentally responsible products and services. Green Seal Certification means that the Essex Inn meets rigorous, science-based environmental leadership standards.

What you can do to help us conserve energy and water

Every day in hotels millions of gallons of water are used to wash towels and linens that have been used only once. To help conserve energy and water, we encourage all our guests to reuse towels and bed linen.

It’s your choice. If you feel you can reuse your towel, please hang it on the bathroom rack. If you would like a fresh towel simply leave it on your bathroom floor and we’ll replace it for you.

We change bed linens every third day and at check out. However, if you would like fresh linen simply place the card requesting fresh linen on your pillow and we will change the bed for you.

Our other environmental initiatives

According to Green Seal, the average hotel purchases more products in one week than one hundred families typically do in a year. At Chicago’s Essex Inn we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and improving the sustainability of our operations. Our initiatives include:

• In-room, public space and meeting room recycling bins as part of an extensive recycling program
• CFL energy-efficient lighting throughout the hotel
• Use of environmentally safe and non-toxic cleaning supplies, including the laundry detergent used to clean linens and towels
• PVC room key cards that are 100% biodegradable
• Discounted parking rates for hotel guests with hybrid vehicles
• Water-conserving fixtures throughout the hotel
• Food donation
• The use of reusable ceramic coffee cups for guests in place of Styrofoam products.
• Property-wide printing on recycled paper, and the use of double-sided paper when possible
