Sustainable Policies Because We’re All Guests Of The Earth Chicago’s Essex Inn invites you to join us in our commitment to caring for and protecting our environment. In 2008, we were Green Seal-certified Bronze for our progressive environmental policies. Our hotel meets the Green Seal Environmental Standard for U.S. Lodging Properties for waste minimization, water and energy efficiency, hazardous substances handling, and environmentally responsible purchasing. Green Seal is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to safeguarding the environment and promoting the manufacture, purchase and use of environmentally responsible products and services. Green Seal Certification ensures that the Essex Inn meets rigorous, science-based environmental leadership standards. According to Green Seal, the average hotel purchases more products in one week than one hundred families typically do in a year; this represents an opportunity for all of us to reduce impact and improve sustainability. Every day, millions of gallons of water are used to wash towels and linens that have been used only once. To help the Essex Inn conserve energy and water, we encourage guests to hang their towels up for re-use. Ultimately, it is their choice: a towel on the rack means "I will use it again;" a towel on the floor means "Please replace this towel." Additionally, we change linens every third day and at check out unless guests tell us otherwise by placing a special card on a pillow. Other eco-friendly hotel policies include:
